Shimita El Diego, a key figure in the soukous movement, co-founder of the legendary band Soukous Stars, and member of Le Grand Zaiko, is making his grand return to Montreal. He will celebrate the release of his new album, Gracias (Disques Nuits d’Afrique/Believe), on stage on Saturday, September 26, at Club Balattou.

Originally known as Lukombo Nzambe, Shimita is a renowned singer-songwriter from the Congo. He drew deep inspiration from African music legends such as Tabu Ley Rochereau and Joseph Kabasele, and rose to prominence in the 1980s by collaborating with influential Zairian bands during the early days of soukous music. His exceptional vocal abilities are showcased in the famous soukous hit “Lagos Night.”

Through his original songs in various languages, Shimita’s music transcends linguistic and cultural barriers, which has helped solidify his position as a leading figure in African music.

With his new album Gracias, Shimita unveils a 12-track album featuring a diverse range of musical styles, from Congolese rumba to soukous. He will be accompanied by eight musicians and dancers for a show known for its festive and danceable atmosphere.
