Lethbridge Symphony Series I: The Hebrides Cave of Melody

Live music

Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra

Featuring Gabe Kastelic, viola

Our concert begins with a work inspired by a visit to the Scottish island of Staffa, home to Fingal’s Cave.  Two themes set the scene: rolling waves of a restless sea, alongside the stunning beauty of the cave itself.  The music drenches its audience in feelings of loneliness and solitude.

Next, the LSO brings you Carl Stamitz’ concerto, originally written to showcase his own virtuosity.  Guest artist Gabe Kastelic, LSO’s principal viola, steps into his soloist’s shoes and engages in a musical conversation with the orchestra, full of range and colour, via his own beautiful instrument.

What were you doing in late August?  Dvořák’s Fifth Symphony was written in a mere six weeks, almost the same time frame from the end of summer to our concert date!  With this work, Dvořák gave the symphonic form a new modern slant.  Rhythmical and dramatically expressive, the last movement was touted as “a grand inspiration” by one critic.
